THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 So when he brought Our signs to them, they started mocking at them! 47 (Even though) each miracle that We showed them was greater than the other. So We seized them with chastisement so that they may turn back. 48 And they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright. 49 but when We relieved them of the torment, they broke their word. 50 And Firon proclaimed amongst his people: O my people! is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these rivers flow beneath me; do you not then see? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him? 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 When at length they provoked Us, We exacted retribution from them, and We drowned them all. 55 and made them a thing of the past and an example for those who would come after them. 56
