We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Aye! I am better than this one who is despicable, and well-nigh cannot make himself plain. 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 So when he had brainwashed his people, they followed him; indeed they were a disobedient nation. 54 So when they made Us wrathful, We took revenge from them – We therefore drowned all of them. 55 And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. 56
