Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
