Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
