Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. 29
