Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
