Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the luminious Book. 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
