Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
