The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Star when it plunges, 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
