The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 And your garments purify! 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 So that is a tough day. 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons present by his side. 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked around, 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
