The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
