The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he (Muhammad SAW) saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 near which is Paradise. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 And Manat the other third? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
