The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 what, will you dispute with him what he sees? 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
