The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the star when it plunges, 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 When that which covers covered the lote-tree; 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
