The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 Then he approached and descended 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which covers covered the lote-tree; 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
