The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it plunges, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
