The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it sets: 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
