A numerous company from among the first, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
