a large group of the earlier people 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
