A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 "We have fallen into debt; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
