A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 "We are ruined, 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
