a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
