And indeed We sent Moosa along with Our signs towards Firaun and his chieftains – he therefore said, “Indeed I am a Noble Messenger of the Lord of the Creation.” 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 But they said: "O sorcerer, call on your Lord for us in accordance with the compact He has made with you. We shall certainly come to guidance." 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 The Pharaoh shouted to his people, "My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine? and can you not see that the streams flow from beneath my palace? 51 Am I (not) better than him who is contemptible, and cannot even express himself clearly? 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
