a good many of olden times, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
