The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 but, We see it as near! 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Save worshippers. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
