The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
