The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 except those that pray, 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
