The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and all those on earth. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Save worshippers. 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
