The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 his wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 save those that pray 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
