The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place – 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Dragging by the head, 16 Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their privates 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
