The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
