The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
