The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 So that is a tough day. 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I will cast him into the fire of Hell. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
