The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 Purify your inner self, 4 Pollution shun! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 over it are nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
