The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Cloaked one, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 shun uncleanness; 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 So that is a tough day. 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
