The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 and sons standing before him, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
