The Pharaoh said to the chiefs around him: "He is certainly a clever magician. 34 “He wishes to expel you out of your land by his magic; so what is your advice?” 35 They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers 36 who shall assemble before thee all sorcerers of great knowledge" 37 So the magicians were gathered together at the appointed time on the fixed day, 38 And it was said to the people: "Are you (too) going to assemble? 39 Haply we shall follow the sorcerers if it should be they are the victors.' 40 Then, when the sorcerers came, they said to Pharaoh, 'Shall we indeed have a wage, if we should be the victors?' 41 He said, 'Yes indeed; and you shall then be among the near-stationed.' 42 (Moses) asked the magicians, "Cast down what you want to". 43 Thereupon they threw their [magic ropes and their staffs, and said: "By Pharaoh's might, behold, it is we indeed who have prevailed!" 44 Then Moses cast down his staff and it swallowed up their lying invention, 45 The magicians therefore fell down prostrate. 46 saying, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe 47 "The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 48 Said [Pharaoh]: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Verily, he must be your master who has taught you magic! But in time you shall come to know [my revenge]: most certainly shall I cut off your hands and your feet in great numbers, because of [your] perverseness, and shall most certainly crucify you in great numbers, all together!" 49 They answered: "No harm [canst thou do to us]: verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn! 50 We certainly hope our Lord will forgive our sins as we are the first to believe." 51
