The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhamad), the cloaked, 1 Arise and warn, 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 thy robes purify 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
