The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 And your clothing purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 and who still desires more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
