Nay, and by the moon, 32 And by oath of the night when it turns back. 33 And [by] the morning when it brightens, 34 it is one of the greatest trials, 35 It is a warning for mankind 36 To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;- 37 Each soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 Except those of the right hand 39 who shall be in the Gardens, and shall ask 40 And (ask) of the Sinners: 41 "what led you into hell?" 42 and they shall reply, "We were not among those who prayed; 43 "Nor were we of those who fed the indigent; 44 We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders, 45 and we cried lies to the Day of Doom, 46 until there came to us the certainty. 47 And so, of no benefit to them could be the intercession of any that would intercede for them. 48 WHAT, THEN, is amiss with them that they turn away from all admonition 49 as if they were startled asses 50 Fleeing away from a lion. 51 Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah). 52 No indeed; but they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 Nay, this surely is an admonition: 54 so whoever wills shall remember it. 55 But none will remember, unless Allah wills, He is the Owner of fear, the Owner of forgiveness. 56
