He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 to him thou attendest 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
