He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 you attend to him, 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 and fearfully, 9 you ignore him. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olives and palms, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 Mother and father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
