He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him, 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 to him thou attendest 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And he fears, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
