Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Have you heard the story of the overwhelming event (the Day of Judgment)? 1 [Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled, 2 toiling [under burdens of sin,] worn out [by fear,] 3 roasting at a scorching Fire 4 and will be made to drink from a boiling spring, 5 They will have no food other than bitter and thorny fruit 6 which neither sustains, nor satisfy hunger. 7 Many a face will be in serenity on that day. 8 well pleased with their striving, 9 in a garden sublime, 10 wherein thou wilt hear no empty talk. 11 Therein shall be a spring running! 12 Therein will be thrones raised high, 13 and goblets placed ready, 14 And cushions set in rows, 15 And rich carpets spread. 16 Do they never reflect on the camels and how they were created, 17 And the heaven – how it has been raised? 18 And the mountains, how they are firmly fixed, 19 And the earth – how it has been spread out? 20 Therefore advise; indeed you are a proclaimer of advice. (The Holy Prophet is a Remembrance from Allah.) 21 and are not invested with the authority to compel them. 22 But whoever will turn away (from the Truth), 23 him will God cause to suffer the greatest suffering [in the life to come]: 24 Indeed, to Us is their return. 25 And Ours their reckoning. 26
