Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Dawn 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Enter among My servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
