Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And the ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah). 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
