Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And the ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 The like of whom were never created in the realm; 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 for, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 And enter into My garden. 30
