Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
