The people of 'Ad, too, rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not take heed? 124 "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 125 So fear God and listen to me. 126 For this I ask of you no wage, for my wage falls only on the Lord of the Worlds. 127 Build ye on every high place a monument for vain delight? 128 and erect huge palaces as though you will live for ever, 129 and when you strike you strike like tyrants? 130 "Now fear Allah, and obey me. 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 Who has provided you with flocks and children 133 gardens, and springs. 134 Verily I fear for you the torment of a Mighty Day. 135 They replied: 'It is the same to us whether you admonish or whether you are not one of the admonishers. 136 This [religion of ours] is none other than that to which our forebears clung, 137 and we shall not be punished." 138 Eventually they gave the lie to him and We destroyed them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 139 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 140
