Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
