Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
